Why See a Dermatologist?

Dermatology is defined as the study of the skin, fat, hair, nails, oral and genital membranes; the recognition of normal variants and the diagnosis of disorders, diseases, cancers, cosmetic and ageing conditions; followed by the management of these by different approaches and therapies.
In order to become a dermatologist one must graduate from medical school and complete an accredited dermatology residency program. Upon completion of this training, a dermatologist becomes "board-eligible." Board examinations [boards] are designed to test a dermatologist's knowledge base and ability to adequately care for patients. Passing such an examination gives a dermatologist the distinction of being "board-certified."
